Korean Language
The Korean language is referred as Hanguk-eo
("Korean language", 한국어) and its script is called Hangul or Hangeul(한글). In terms of users’ population, the Korean language
is in the 13th place among several
thousand languages in the world (according to data of National Institute of Korean Language
till Jan 2008).
King Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty
invented the Korean
script, Hangeul in 1443, in order to let people with little education could
learn to read and write. Hangeul is composed of basic 14 consonants and 10 vowels.
Hangeul Day is celebrated on October 9. The modern
name Hangeul was coined by Ju Sigyeong
in 1912. The original name was Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음), meaning the Correct/Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People.
